AI Search
Search that answers with a synthesised response instead of a ranked list of links.
AI search is the shift from search results to search answers. Instead of returning ten links for a user to evaluate, an AI search engine reads across many sources and writes a single answer, often naming a handful of brands and citing a handful of pages. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI overviews are all examples.
The change matters for brands because the click is no longer guaranteed. A user who gets a complete answer may never visit a website, so the value moves from being clicked to being named and cited inside the answer itself. A brand absent from the answer is invisible even if it ranks first in the old blue-link results.
This is the environment that GEO, AEO and LLMO all respond to. Measuring your presence in AI search is the first step, which is what AI visibility and share of voice quantify.
Frequently asked questions
- Is AI search replacing traditional search?
- It is layering on top of it. Traditional link results still exist, but AI answers increasingly sit above them and satisfy the query directly, which reduces clicks to individual sites.
- How do brands show up in AI search?
- By being present and consistent in the sources these engines read and trust, so the model names and cites you when it composes an answer in your category.
